The daylily Hemerocallis cultivar,
'Spacecoast Congo Red' designated as
seedling number 502-22, is a tetraploid
hybrid exhibiting outstanding ornamental
and horticultural characteristics. The
flowers are a striking deep black-magenta
with a lighter watermark effect that
enhances the visual depth of the bloom.
The petals are edged with a dazzling 24-
karat gold ruffle, creating a dramatic
contrast with the darker tones of the
flower. A vibrant yellow-green throat
provides additional brightness and serves
as a focal point within the bloom. This
cultivar grows to a height of 36 inches and
features early to midseason flowering. The
blooms are 6.5 inches in diameter, with 4–
5-way branching and 20–24 buds per
scape, ensuring abundant and consistent
flowering. The evergreen foliage,
combined with extended morning opening
(EMO) and a fragrant scent, enhances its
garden performance. The cultivar is fertile
both as a pod and pollen parent, making it
a versatile option for hybridizing. A reliable
rebloomer, this daylily demonstrates
excellent resistance to rust, leaf streak,
and insect pests, ensuring robust
performance in various environments.
Adaptable to USDA Plant Hardiness Zones
5–10, seedling 502-22 represents a
valuable addition to breeding programs
focused on developing larger flowers,
intricate patterns, and improved plant
resilience.
